Case Study

Manufactured Gas Plant Investigation

Objective

Monitoring wells showed that petroleum-related contamination was present on site. A passive soil gas (PSG) survey was performed to identify the source areas of known contamination at the Manufactured Gas Plant (MGP). The MGP facility was an active site that had been in operation for many years.

Findings

A two-person Beacon field team installed 304 PSG Samplers over a two-day period. Samplers were installed through soils, gravel, asphalt, and concrete. To accommodate field schedules, the Samplers were exposed for eight days in the field and the two-person field team required one day for retrieval of the Samplers. Survey results clearly showed where source areas are present on the site, as well as those areas where additional soil and groundwater sampling was not necessary. The client indicated that the soil-gas data correlated well with data gathered to date and that they were able to significantly reduce the number of soil samples that must be collected to focus their remediation efforts.
