Last month, ITRC delivered a comprehensive breakdown of the puzzle pieces that fit together to form a complete VI Conceptual Site Model (CSM). If you missed the two-part series, you won’t want to miss the opportunity to attend the ITRC Training Sessions coming this fall.

Navigating sites with VI concerns is uniquely challenging because of the high variability among state-specific regulatory guidance. Understanding how to approach these projects is the first step for consultants to maximize their VI toolbox in a site-specific framework.

So, where does passive sampling fit into the VI Strategy? Beacon’s role begins at the beginning during the Assessment and Evaluation Stage, supporting consultants as they build a complete CSM.

Passive samplers are a valuable tool for collecting accurate sub-slab soil vapor, sewer gas, and indoor air data and for screening buildings in or out of further VI investigations. With discrete, low-profile, and simplified procedures compared to evacuated canisters, passive sampling is a preferred method by field teams and community members.

The use of passive samplers doesn’t end with the initial sampling events and indoor air monitoring. Passive sampling is performed following remediation or mitigation work to demonstrate whether successful risk reduction was achieved. Passive sampling also provides a low-cost approach for long-term VI Monitoring Programs, with the ability to maintain an inventory of sampling supplies on hand for ongoing sampling.

The industry’s understanding of VI is advancing, and the environmental professionals trusted to protect community health from VI risks are routinely including passive samplers in their toolbox.
