The 2026 Michigan AIPG Environmental Risk Management Workshop (June 16–17) brought together environmental professionals, including many managers from the MI EGLE Remediation and Redevelopment Division (RRD), to discuss emerging challenges and innovative solutions in environmental investigation and remediation. The workshop featured presentations spanning risk-based corrective action, vapor intrusion, PFAS management, site characterization, and digital tools for environmental decision-making.
Several of the presentations focused on one of the industry’s fastest-evolving vapor intrusion (VI) challenges: investigating the migration of VOC vapors through preferential pathways, such as sewer lines and other utility conduits. Presenters discussed the importance of collecting time-integrated vapor samples using passive samplers to address the significant temporal variability often observed in conduit vapor concentrations. As Michigan and other states continue to refine guidance and expand the use of passive sampling technologies, these approaches are becoming increasingly important for evaluating vapor intrusion risks at sites impacted by VOC plumes.
